Get a Handle on Sheep Production

Jun 5, 2019 | News

Workshops, demonstrations and exhibits will provide value for visiting sheep producers.

From handling and grazing to pasture management, BMO Livestock Central offers live demonstrations, learning opportunities and exhibits on a variety of topics to support profitable sheep production.

Stock Dog Handling Demonstrations

One of the best tools to support a shepherd is a well-trained stock dog. A stock dog saves significant time and effort, making it a valuable addition to any sheep operation.

Learning to work with a stock dog takes some front-end effort, but experienced handlers say it is worth it. A four-legged handler often does the work of two people, quietly and efficiently moving sheep with minimal stress.

Jared Epp, who raises sheep and border collies near Hanley, SK, will offer stock dog handling demonstrations On Tuesday, July 16 and Wednesday, July 17 at 12:00 p.m.

In Epp’s demos, he will discuss, interpret and show how well-bred stock dogs work, paying special attention to the importance of low-stress livestock handling. This technique involves keeping noise and aggression to a minimum, and encouraging quiet confidence in the dog’s ability to work with the herd.

Speaker Series Topics

The Livestock and Forage Speaker Series, running throughout the show, offers topics of interest to sheep producers each day.
